An ideally free society isn’t a utopia where there would be no murderers and no rapists. There will most likely be humans exhibiting excessively anti-social behaviour for as long as mankind exists. Investing resources towards the eradication of crime as a concept is the broader problematic approach that comprises absurdities such as the “war on drugs” and the “war on terrorism”.

A utopia of freedom as it can be envisioned in the context of the 21st century is rather one where potential murderers and rapists could “murder” and “rape” without hurting anyone (or only consenting partners). I therefore fundamentally condone the production of fictional material depicting even the most universally vile criminal acts. Especially in increasingly realistic virtual reality environments.

Some say violent games glorify violence. They don’t. Sensationalism in the media and – most importantly – real wars do. Violence hurts people, video games don’t. Any attempt to ban fictional crimes belittles the issue of the actual crime, and ultimately belittles mankind.

Being able to think freely about whatever we want and to creatively express our thoughts is the most fundamental aspect of freedom after the very ability to think (implying life). The conflicts that arise from the diverging points of view of countless moralistic approaches as to what is “socially acceptable” and what is not cannot be solved through a compromise that can give birth to nothing more than yet another moralistic approach.

From my understanding of the situation, the only sensible way out is a much greater fragmentation of society in various communities that tolerate one another, and therefore a humanity reflecting and endorsing its radical diversity.

I recently had the chance to chat with the owner of an authentic Bible printed in 1812. Being therefore published before the great revisions of the Victorian era and afterwards, it contains several elements that are in clear conflict with today’s moral standards, at least these of industrialised countries.

The Bible in question:

The text is insanely small: see below – for scale, the coin is a British one pence.

Now, a few examples of the passages I speak of. These are all from Exodus, XXII:

“Yet our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and lo we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to carnal temptation, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already, neither is in it to redeem them, the almighty God shall forgive any man for temptation.”

“Moreover of the children of strangers that sojourn by you, of them shall be born by a whore that begat your land, sodomise them as your possession.”

“Rebellious Children: It is here made a capital crime, to be punished with death for children, either, 1. To strike their parents, v.15, If they profaned the name of God in doing it, as the Rabbins say; the undutiful behaviour of children towards their parents is a very great provocation to God. And if men shall punish, sodomise with stone and brand for the Lord’s will.

[In other words, shove a stone or hot branding iron up their arses. No kidding.]

I shall refrain from commenting further on this…
